Your boiler works hard every day, heating your home and supplying hot water. Like any appliance, it won’t last forever. Most boilers last around 10 to 15 years, and an older boiler can become less efficient, less reliable and more expensive to run. Here are seven signs it may be time to think about a replacement.
1. Your boiler is over 10 years old
Boiler technology has moved on a lot in the last decade. Modern condensing boilers are far more efficient than older models, which can waste a large share of the fuel they burn. If your boiler is over 10 years old, a new A-rated model could noticeably reduce your energy bills.
2. Your energy bills keep rising
If your gas or oil bills are going up but you aren’t using your heating more, your boiler may be losing efficiency. An ageing boiler has to work harder to produce the same amount of heat.
3. Frequent breakdowns and repairs
One repair isn’t usually a cause for concern, but regular call-outs soon add up. Parts for older boilers can also become harder to find, which means longer waits and higher costs. At some point, putting that money towards a new boiler makes more sense.
4. Strange noises
Banging, gurgling, whistling or “kettling” sounds can point to a build-up of limescale or sludge, or a failing part. It’s worth having an engineer take a look before a small problem turns into a bigger one.
5. The flame is yellow or orange, not blue
A healthy gas boiler flame should be crisp and blue. A yellow or orange flame, soot marks around the boiler or extra condensation on nearby windows can be signs of incomplete combustion and possible carbon monoxide.
If you notice any of these signs, turn the boiler off, open windows and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm fitted.
6. Your radiators take a long time to heat up
If your home takes longer to warm up than it used to, or some radiators stay cold, your boiler may be struggling. Sometimes a power flush or bleeding the radiators will fix it, but in an older system it can be a sign the boiler is reaching the end of its life.
7. A smell coming from the boiler
You should never smell anything unusual from your boiler. If you smell gas, turn off the supply at the meter if it’s safe to do so, don’t use any electrical switches, open doors and windows, and call 0800 111 999 straight away.
