It’s easy to forget about your boiler until something goes wrong, and that usually happens on the coldest day of the year. An annual boiler service is one of the simplest ways to keep your home warm, safe and running efficiently. Here’s why it matters and what to expect.

Why get your boiler serviced every year?

Safety

A faulty gas or oil boiler can leak carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas you can’t see or smell. During a service, a qualified engineer checks that your boiler is burning fuel safely and that fumes are safely flued away from your home.

Protect your guarantee

Most manufacturer guarantees, including Worcester Bosch’s, require the boiler to be serviced every year by a qualified engineer. Miss a service and you could invalidate your guarantee, leaving you to pay for repairs that would otherwise have been covered.

Lower running costs

A well-maintained boiler runs more efficiently, so it uses less fuel to heat your home. Small adjustments and cleaning during a service can help keep your energy bills down.

Fewer breakdowns

Engineers can spot worn parts and minor faults early, before they cause a breakdown. It’s much better to fix a small problem in the summer than to be left without heating or hot water in January.

A longer life for your boiler

Regular maintenance helps your boiler last longer, so you can put off the cost of a replacement.

What happens during a boiler service?

Every boiler is different, but a typical service includes:

  • A visual check of the boiler, pipework and flue
  • Checking the controls and operating pressure
  • Removing the casing and inspecting internal parts
  • Cleaning key components where needed
  • Checking gas pressure and burner performance (gas boilers)
  • A flue gas analysis to confirm the boiler is burning safely
  • Checking seals, valves and safety devices
  • A written record of the work carried out

Most services take around an hour.

When is the best time to book?

Late spring and summer are ideal. Engineers are less busy, and any problems can be sorted before you need your heating again. Whenever you book, the most important thing is to stick to roughly the same time each year.

Always use a registered engineer

Gas boilers must only be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and oil boilers should be serviced by an OFTEC registered technician. Carters Heating Services is both, so we can look after gas and oil boilers across Norfolk.
